All products from Skeppshult are pre-treated and are ready to use! No pretreatment required. To recommend, however, is a rapid rinsing in hot water to remove any dust. All Skeppshults products used for cooking are pre-treated with KRAV-labeled [organic] rapeseed oil from Carlshamns. This gives the products the black colour and natural non-stick protection - without adding any chemicals.

Do Skeppshult's cast iron pans scratch ceramic and glass hobs?
Skeppshult's products have been tested at the Bosch/Siemens laboratory. Result: Skeppshult's products do not scratch ceramic and glass hobs. Where can Skeppshult's products be bought?
Online or from selected retailers and stockists.

Why are Skeppshult's cast iron products better than products which are coated with a non-stick material?
Skeppshult's cast iron products contain no chemicals or toxins which can be released when cooking.

Do cast iron products have to be so heavy?
Good quality weighs! and there are several good reasons for Skeppshult's cast iron products weighing more than products made from light metal or tin.
Safety: Pans used on a stove are hot. Light vessels can tip or easily be knocked-over, with a substantial risk of burns or injury. Performance: An even temperature and well distributed heat are essential in good cooking results.
Durability: Skeppshult pure cast iron products have a 25 year guarantee.
Quality: Skeppshult place their emphasis on quality and cast iron pans have a concave, turned base that is approximately 6mm thick, as recommended by The Swedish Consumer Agency.

My cast iron product has rusted - What should I do?
See Easy Maintenance and What to do if your pan has been improperly cared for - for descriptions of how to maintain and take care cast iron products easily and properly.

The food sticks in my vessels - why and what can I do?
All of Skeppshult's products are made from pure cast iron and are pre-treated with pure, organic, oil. There is nothing in these substances that makes food burn or stick unless the temperature is too high or unless fat which is not meant for cooking is being used. (Some fats and oils are not for cooking, e.g. some sandwich spreads). The correct frying temperature (regardless of frying pan) is between +180 and 200 C. Another reason could be that the vessel/frying pan has been washed in a dishwasher or with too much washing-up liquid. If that is the case the cooking oil which is supposed to be in the cast iron product can have dissolved and leached from the vessel, leaving no so-called ”non-stick” protection.

The kitchen paper, dishbrush or sauce/food turns black.
If that is the case the cooking oil which is supposed to be in the cast iron product can have dissolved or leached from the vessel, leaving no so-called ”non-stick” protection. Irrespective of the problem, it is easily rectified - Boil water in the vessel. Pour the water out and let the vessel dry, e.g. on the remaining heat from the hob. Thereafter follow our Easy Maintenance and What to do if your pan has been improperly cared for - Here you will find descriptions of how to maintain and take care cast iron products easily.

What surface coating do Skeppshult's household products have? What kind of black colour do Skeppshult use?
No colouring or other chemicals are used in the production of Skeppshult's cast iron products. Their black colour results from pre-treating with organic vegetable oil from Carlshamns. This provides the products with a nice, black colour and means that the product is factory finished and can be used immediately. In this way, products develop a natural non-stick protection - without any chemicals. (No measures need to be taken before the product is used. However, a quick rinse using hot water to get rid of possible dust, followed by drying with a cloth or kitchen towel is recommended).

How can I get a hold of a lid?
Look at our Products Section for available lids.

The base of my pan is concave.
YES! This is an important detail which is only present in high quality pans. All Skeppshult pans have this feature, which ensures that the pan base is actually flat, when hot. For further information, see Base Knowledge

Is it possible to use a wooden handle in the oven?
No. The heat dries out the wood which makes it change colour and shrink. For use in ovens, use products with stainless steel, cast iron or silicon handles (silicon handles withstand temperatures of up to  230°C).

Is it possible to use a glass lid in the oven?
Yes. Our glass lids which have cast iron knobs can withstand heat up to 230 °C.

Can food be stored in a cast iron vessel?
It is not recommended to keep food in a cast iron vessel for too long. All vessels, regardless of material, which are manufactured for preparing food are unsuitable to use as storage vessels.
